In the Sea of Marmara, fishing this season is hampered by heavy marine mucilage, a gelatinous substance of various plants, such as legumes or seaweeds, that contains protein and polysaccharides and is similar to plant gums. According to Hook and Net website, mucilage damages fishing gear and equipment.
The Turkish government has formulated relevant protection policies, including setting quotas for fish catches, establishing marine reserves, and implementing seasonal fishing bans to allow fish populations to replenish.
