Foreign trade via Tianjin surges by 47%

Foreign trade via northern port city of Tianjin surges by 47 percent year on year to reach US$67.77 billion in 2004, according to the Tianjin Customs.

Figures released by the customs show that exports in 2004 were valued at US$38.48 billion, an year-on-year increase of 45.1 percent. Imports reach US$29.29 billion, a surge of 48.4 percent.

Foreign-funded businesses contribute to 46.7 percent of the total trade volume, totaling US$31.68 billion.

Last year, US$14.66 billion of machinery and electronic products were exported via Tianjin, up 51.2 percent over the previous year.

Japan, the European Union, the United States and the Republic of Korea were the major destinations, exports to which total US$43.59 billion, accounting for 64.3 percent of the total trade volume via the port in 2004.
