Cook for hope

A series of cooking classes at Le Kid will allow foodies to learn new dishes from around the world - and help a worthy cause, too. Sessions on March 11 and April 8 are 500 yuan ($80) per person, while a March 25 class by guest chef Rob Cunningham of Feast at the East Beijing Hotel is 800 yuan. Each class is limited to about 15 people, and all proceeds go to the United Family Children's Fund program Wheels for Hope, which provides medical services to migrant school children and teachers via its community health van.

Dual sex, single cake

Cake designer extraordinaire Bonnae Gokson has created a tribute to Art Basel in Hong Kong, which opens next week, with a new addition to her cake collection, the Yin Yang Beauty. The confection is inspired by a rare butterfly that made headlines when it was found in Hong Kong several years ago - the half-male, half-female Great Mormon butterfly. Scientifically known as a gynandromorph, the dual-sex creature was striking for its violet-blue male right wing, and white-and-gray female left wing. With a delicate sugar butterfly perched on top, the cake has an additional Hong Kong touch: It's flavored with the traditional half-milk tea and half-coffee local drink Yin Yang.
